Referral Hiring and Gender Segregation in the Workplace

چکیده
Segregation by type of work or discrimination are two common explanations for gender segregation in the workplace. Here, I discuss a third: gender segregation may occur because of referral hiring through segregated social networks. I examine data on the inter-firm gender segregation of employees at US colleges and universities. Using a combination of analytical modeling, empirical estimation, and agent based modeling techniques I find that plausible levels of referral hiring generate high levels of segregation that are consistent with the levels of segregation observed in the data.

Modelling the Emergence and Dynamics of Social and Workplace Segregation∗
The relationship between social segregation and workplace segregation has been traditionally studied as a one-way causal relationship mediated by referral hiring. In this paper we introduce an alternative framework which describes the dynamic relationships between social segregation, workplace segregation, individuals’ homophily levels, and referral hiring. An agent-based simulation model was d...

I use data on the hiring practices and spatial location of firms in four cities to model the process of interfirm racial segregation. When I control for the spatial location of the firm, the use of employee referrals reduced the probability of hiring a black worker by 75% in firms that are less than 10% black. Among all firms, the results suggest that employee referrals are just as important as...
متن کاملGender Segregation by Occupations in the Public and the Private Sector. the Case of Spain
In Spain, recruiting and promotion procedures in the public sector would appear to leave less room for gender discrimination than in the private sector. Employing data for 1977 and 1992, this paper explores the consequences of these procedures for gender segregation using an additive segregation index based on the entropy concept. It is found that gender segregation in the private sector is sig...
